Case Study / Kids Education App

Wonder Isles: Kids Educational Game Development Case Study by NipsApp

167 offline games, zero ads

Thirteen islands, 167 hand made learning activities, and a build that collects nothing at all. This is how NipsApp Game Studios designed a children's app for the strictest review process on the App Store, and got it approved.

Ages 5 to 12 4+ Age Rating Works Offline No Ads No Data Collected Free

The island map. Thirteen isles, each holding a different subject, all playable with the internet switched off.

The short version

Wonder Isles is a children's educational game built and published by NipsApp Game Studios for iPhone, iPad and Apple silicon Macs. It holds 167 hand crafted learning activities across thirteen themed islands, covering maths, reading, science, memory, music, art and kindness, for children aged 5 to 12. Every activity runs fully offline.

The app carries a 4+ age rating in the Education category, is free with no advertising, and contains no advertising SDK, no analytics SDK and no third party code of any kind. It makes no network requests at all, which is why Apple's own privacy panel reports Data Not Collected. Building an app that can honestly make that claim, and then proving it through repeated App Store review cycles, was the hardest part of the project.

Why we built it

Most kids' learning apps are advertising businesses wearing a cartoon hat

Open a typical free children's education app and count what happens before a child learns anything. A sign up screen. A subscription wall. A video advert for a game rated far above the child's age. A tracking SDK quietly reporting behaviour to a network the parent has never heard of.

NipsApp Game Studios wanted to find out whether a genuinely generous children's app could still be built. Not a demo with three free levels. A full world, given away, that asks nothing of the family and takes nothing from them.

That single decision, no adverts and no data, shaped every technical choice that followed. It also removed the usual business model, which meant the app had to justify itself on quality alone.

The world

Thirteen isles, 167 activities

Each island holds one subject area. A child sails between them freely, so learning never feels like a syllabus.

Design decision

The right level, not just bigger numbers

Most children's apps scale difficulty by making the numbers larger. Wonder Isles changes the whole activity instead.

5–7

Counting shells on a beach

Concrete, visual, tactile. Quantities are small enough to hold in the head and every answer is something the child can see and touch on screen.

8–10

Working with the idea

The same island now asks for place value, fractions and reasoning steps, with visual support still present but no longer doing all the work.

11–12

Working out which dinosaur left a footprint

Deduction, multi step problems and inference. The child is asked to reach a conclusion rather than recall a fact.

The band can be changed at any time, which matters more than it sounds. Siblings share devices, and a child having a bad week should be allowed to drop back down without it being framed as failure.

The hard part

Getting through App Store review

Apple reviews children's apps to a standard no other category faces. Wonder Isles went through several rejection and resubmission cycles before approval. Every one of them made the app better.

Here is what review pushed back on, and what we changed.

Review theme 01

Anything a child could tap to leave the app

Apps aimed at children are held to a strict rule on outbound links, purchase prompts and anything that moves a child out of the app without an adult present. Every tappable route out has to be reconsidered, including the ones that seem harmless.

What we changed: Every external link, store link and support link was moved behind the parental gate. Inside the child facing world, there is nowhere to tap that leads off the island.
Review theme 02

The parental gate had to be a real gate

A parental gate that a determined seven year old can solve is not a parental gate. Review scrutinises the mechanism itself, not just its presence, and the settings it protects.

What we changed: The parents' area sits behind a proper gate with an optional PIN. Behind it: stars earned, minutes played, subjects practised, the daily time limit, Calm Mode, and the option to reset or erase progress entirely.
Review theme 03

Privacy declarations have to match the binary

The App Privacy panel is a declaration, and for children's apps it is checked against what the app actually does. Any third party SDK, however ordinary, changes what must be disclosed and what consent is required.

What we changed: Rather than disclosing and defending third party code, we removed all of it. No advertising SDK, no analytics SDK, no crash reporting SDK, no third party libraries. The shipped app makes no network requests at all, so the honest declaration is Data Not Collected.
Review theme 04

Age rating, metadata and screenshots have to agree

A mismatch between the stated age rating, the described audience, the screenshots and the actual in app content is one of the most common reasons a kids' app is held. Everything on the listing is treated as a claim.

What we changed: The listing was rebuilt so the 4+ rating, the Made for Ages 6 to 8 placement, the Education category, the screenshots and the in app difficulty bands all describe the same product.
Review theme 05

Every one of 167 activities had to hold up

Review does not sample a children's app politely. Content, tone, failure states and sound design are all fair game, and a single activity that punishes a wrong answer can put the whole submission at risk.

What we changed: Failure was designed out. A wrong answer gets a soft sound and an invitation to try again. No buzzer, no red cross, no countdown timer pushing a child to panic. A right answer gets stars and confetti.
Outcome

Approved and live

Wonder Isles is on the App Store at a 4+ rating, in the Education category, free, with Apple's own privacy panel confirming that the developer collects no data from the app. The version that shipped is materially stronger than the one first submitted, which is the honest summary of what review did for it.

There is nowhere for the data to go

Wonder Isles contains no advertising SDK, no analytics SDK and no third party code. It makes no network requests. Nothing about a child is collected, uploaded or shared, because the app has no mechanism capable of doing it.

That is also why it works on a plane.

For grown ups

What parents get

Behind the parental gate

  • Stars earned and minutes played, so screen time is visible rather than guessed at
  • The subjects being practised, which reveals what a child is avoiding as much as what they enjoy
  • A daily time limit that the app enforces itself
  • Calm Mode, which reduces motion and sparkle for children who find animation overwhelming
  • Sound effects and background music as separate switches
  • Progress can be reset, or erased completely, at any time

What is deliberately absent

  • No adverts of any kind, including rewarded video
  • No in app purchases and no subscription wall
  • No sign up, no account and no email address required
  • No analytics, no tracking and no advertising identifier
  • No social features, chat or user generated content
  • No internet connection needed, ever

What this project proves

Why publishers bring kids' apps to NipsApp

We have been through kids' review

Children's apps face rules no other category does. Having taken an app through repeated rejection cycles to approval, NipsApp knows where submissions actually break, rather than guessing from the guidelines.

Compliance designed in, not bolted on

Parental gates, offline operation and zero SDK architecture are cheap to plan and expensive to retrofit. We build children's apps to clear review from the first submission.

Content at volume

167 distinct activities across nine subject areas, each scaling across three age bands, is a content pipeline problem before it is a code problem. We built the pipeline to match.

Genuine privacy by architecture

Data Not Collected is easy to claim and hard to earn. Removing every third party SDK is the only version of that claim which survives scrutiny from a reviewer or a regulator.

Educational design, not gamified drilling

Difficulty that changes the task rather than the number, and failure states that invite another attempt, come from thinking about children rather than about retention metrics.

Full cycle, in house

Concept, art, engineering, content authoring, compliance and store submission handled by one studio. NipsApp Game Studios has been shipping mobile, PC, VR, AR and multiplayer titles since 2010.

Questions

About Wonder Isles

Who made the Wonder Isles kids app?

Wonder Isles was designed, developed and published by NipsApp Game Studios, listed on the App Store as NIPSAPP GAMING SOFTWARE PRIVATE LIMITED. It is an in house product rather than client work.

What ages is Wonder Isles for?

Children aged 5 to 12. The app carries a 4+ App Store age rating and is listed as Made for Ages 6 to 8, with three selectable difficulty bands covering 5 to 7, 8 to 10 and 11 to 12.

Does Wonder Isles work without internet?

Yes, completely. All 167 activities run offline. The app makes no network requests at all, which is why it works on flights and long car journeys.

Does the app collect data about my child?

No. There is no advertising SDK, no analytics SDK and no third party code in the app. Apple's App Privacy panel on the listing reports Data Not Collected.

Are there adverts or in app purchases?

Neither. The app is free, with no advertising, no rewarded video, no in app purchases and no subscription.

Why is App Store review harder for children's apps?

Apps for children are held to additional requirements covering parental gates, outbound links, purchase prompts, data collection, third party SDKs and the match between age rating and actual content. A submission can be rejected for any one of them.

Can NipsApp build a kids' educational app for my company?

Yes. NipsApp Game Studios builds children's education and game apps end to end, including the compliance work needed to clear Apple and Google review. Wonder Isles was built to prove the approach on our own product first.
