What Is AutiLearn: The Calm Planet?

AutiLearn is a calm learning app built for autistic children and any child who does better with a slower, softer pace. There is no loud noise, no countdown timer, no winners, and no losers. Just soft colours, clear pictures, and activities a child can move through at their own speed.

Most learning apps for kids are built around points, streaks, and pressure to keep going. NipsApp built AutiLearn the other way round. Every screen, every sound, and every reward was designed to feel safe and predictable first, and only educational second. This is a special needs education app where comfort is the starting point, not an afterthought bolted onto a normal game.

As a game development studio that usually builds fast, competitive, reward-driven games, NipsApp had to unlearn a lot of its own habits to build AutiLearn properly. That shift is really what this case study is about.

Quiet Zone

A peaceful space to help a child calm their body and senses.

Signal Village

A friendly place to practise greetings, sharing, and taking turns.

Mood Weather Island

A simple way to notice, name, and understand feelings.

Routine Machine

Step-by-step activities that help a child follow daily routines.

What Problem Was NipsApp Solving?

A lot of learning apps for kids use the same playbook. Bright colours, loud sound effects, countdown timers, scoreboards, and a game-over screen when a child gets something wrong. For many children that works fine. For autistic children or anyone with sensory needs, that same design can be the reason they close the app in the first ten seconds.

Building AutiLearn meant answering questions most game studios never have to ask:

  • How do you teach a skill without a timer, a score, or a fail state pushing the child along?
  • How do you give feedback for a wrong answer that still feels gentle and encouraging?
  • How do you build a break into the app itself, so a child never has to just quit to get calm?
  • How do you give a parent or teacher something useful to look at, without turning a child's progress into a score or a label?

How Did NipsApp Design Around Calm?

Every design decision in AutiLearn traces back to one rule. Remove pressure first, then teach. That rule shows up in small, deliberate choices across the whole app.

  • No scores or rankings. No pressure-based stars, no game-over screens, and nothing that turns learning into a competition.
  • Reduce-motion and no-timer options. A child can turn down motion and remove every timer from the experience.
  • Soft, low-volume audio. Full sound controls and a mute button sit on every single screen.
  • Large, clear pictures. Simple, uncluttered art instead of busy, detailed illustrations.
  • Predictable layouts. Buttons and menus stay in the same place, screen to screen, so nothing feels like a surprise.
  • Gentle, encouraging feedback. A wrong answer never feels like a failure, just a nudge to try again.
  • A Break button on every screen. A child can open a calm Break Menu at any moment, with no time limit on how long they stay there.
  • Gentle rewards. Soft, friendly rewards for playing and exploring, never used to push or pressure a child.

What Is AutiLearn Built On?

AutiLearn runs as a single universal app across iPhone, iPad, and Apple Silicon Mac, built with the same core game engine NipsApp uses across its mobile and cross-platform projects, tuned for a slower, sensory-friendly experience instead of fast gameplay.

  • Engine: Unity, used for the interactive worlds, gentle animations, and tracing activities.
  • Platform: iOS and iPadOS, packaged as a universal app that also runs on Apple Silicon Macs.
  • Audio system: A soft, low-volume sound design with per-screen mute controls and no audio that spikes in volume or pitch.
  • Motion system: A reduce-motion mode built into the engine layer, not just a visual toggle, so animations genuinely slow down or stop.
  • Local data storage: Parent and Teacher Dashboard data, sessions completed, activities explored, and calm tools used, is stored on the device only.
  • No third-party SDKs. No ad network, no analytics tracker, and no in-app purchase system are built into the app, which is why it can run fully offline.

A Closer Look Inside AutiLearn

Ten screens from the app, and what each one is built to do.

Screen 01

Quiet Zone

A peaceful space with soft visuals and gentle sound, built to help a child settle before or during a session. No task, no timer, just a calm place to land.

Screen 02

Signal Village

A friendly setting for practising greetings, sharing, and taking turns. These are social skills that are hard to teach from a worksheet, so the app gives them a low-pressure place to practise instead.

Screen 03

Mood Weather Island

Feelings are shown as weather, a simple, visual way for a child to notice and name what they are feeling. It gives emotional check-ins a shape a young child can actually point at.

Screen 04

Routine Machine

Step-by-step activities that walk a child through daily routines, brushing teeth, getting dressed, packing a bag, broken into small, predictable steps instead of one long instruction.

Screen 05

Recognising Emotions

A gentle game built around matching facial expressions to feelings. It works on emotional recognition without ever timing the child or scoring the attempt.

Screen 06

Matching Pictures and Objects

Simple matching games that build early reasoning skills, pairing pictures and objects that go together, without any penalty for a wrong guess.

Screen 07

First Words, Letters and Numbers

Early literacy and number activities using large, clear pictures and simple yes-or-no interactions, built for a child who is just starting to recognise words and numbers.

Screen 08

Gentle Tracing

A guiding hand leads the child through tracing shapes and letters, built as a fine motor and early writing exercise that never marks an attempt as wrong.

Screen 09

The Break Menu

One tap away on every screen. A child can breathe with a soft breathing bubble, visit a Quiet Room, dim the screen, play calming music, or sit with a comfort pet, with no time limit on any of it.

Screen 10

Parent and Teacher Dashboard

A simple grown-ups gate opens a dashboard showing sessions completed, activities explored, and the calm tools a child uses most, with notes that can be shared with a teacher or therapist. No scores, no labels, no comparisons.

What Did AutiLearn Achieve?

AutiLearn shipped as a complete, calm learning platform built specifically for autistic children and sensory-sensitive learners, not a standard kids app with a few settings turned down. A few things stand out from the build:

  • Four full learning worlds, Quiet Zone, Signal Village, Mood Weather Island, and Routine Machine, each targeting a different everyday skill.
  • A calm design system with no scores, no timers by default, and no game-over state anywhere in the app.
  • A Break Menu available on every single screen, with no limit on how long a child can stay there.
  • A Parent and Teacher Dashboard that reports useful, calm progress notes instead of scores or comparisons.
  • A fully offline, privacy-first build, no ads, no pop-ups, no in-app purchases, and no third-party tracking, confirmed by Apple's own App Privacy disclosure for the app.
  • A single universal build that works across iPhone, iPad, and Apple Silicon Mac.

Built by a Team Willing to Slow Down

AutiLearn: The Calm Planet was designed and built in house by NipsApp Game Studios, a game development studio based in Trivandrum, Kerala, with a second office in Abu Dhabi. NipsApp works on gamification, VR and AR, and full-cycle game development for B2B clients and edtech companies worldwide, and AutiLearn shows that same team applying its skills to accessible, special needs education instead of competitive gameplay.

Looking to build a calm learning app, a sensory-friendly education tool, or an accessible app for autistic children or any other audience with specific needs? NipsApp Game Studios is an educational game development company that has already built and shipped one of these, not just talked about it.
